Tools you will need:

  • Spanners of size 32’, 22’, 15’, 14’, 13’.
  • A brush
  • A piece of waste cloth
  • A thin stick like agarbatti holder.

Introduction:
First figure out whether you really need to do this. Does the chain clatter against the guard while taking turns? Does it leave long gash marks on the swing arm joint? Does the chain have a play of more than 1”? Then you might need to do this.

Set the stage:
Park your machine on the center stand in a comfortable spot. Lay your tools out beside you. Using the brush, clean the rear axle nut and bolts, the chain adjusters and all surfaces you might have to touch.

Step 1
Using the 32’ loosen the large axle nut on the right, 4-5 turns. Now use the ’22 to loosen the axle nut on the left, 4-5 turns. Do not remove the nut.

Step 2
Rotate the wheel a few times and check for chain play. Look at the gap at the axle bracket behind the chain adjusters on both sides. Get a feel of how much you need to tighten the chain.

Step 3
Keep your 12/13 and 14/15 spanners handy. Start on the right, loosen the nut in front of the shock absorber and then proceed to turn the nut behind the shox. Tighten it against the shox by say 5 turns. Now repeat the procedure on the left. Check for even gap in the axle bracket using the agarbatti twig. If required, tighten or loosen accordingly.

Step 4
Rotate your wheel a few times and check for play. There should still be a comfortable 3/4th to 1 inch play when you lift the chain below the swing arm. Once again carefully examine for even tightening using the twig. All clear? Great, now you’re all set. Go to the next step.

Step 5
Tighten the chain adjuster nuts and once again check for evenness in the bracket. Tighten the axle nuts.

Wipe all surfaces again, clean your tools, pack up and leave.
